DVD Cache

This application by David Campbell allows the user to manage a DVD collection. The user can populate the DVD records through various DVD-databases.
  • The ability to populate an Item from multiple sources is interesting. I do not whether a source gets a preference;
  • The application supports barcode scanners;
  • The application implements a Wishlist. This list toggles with the standard library. An Item is in one or the other;

iFreete

iFreete is an application that allows the user to see the freeware applications available for MacOSX. iFreete also checks the free applications that the user has installed and shows which ones need to be updated. I think this is quite cute and could have potential, once it is expanded to include any application.

  • Skins - the application supports Skins for the toolbar. I assume that these are just a set of other icons;

iAmazon

I had a quick look at iAmazon. This application allows user to search and browse through any of the Amazon sites (what is wrong with France?). It looks promising, but needs more work before it is nice to use. I especially do not like the interface. It should be much more like iTunes. Everything on the interface is now huge.

And I miss a lot of MicroContent Client options.

I guess we will see this functionality in DeliciousLibrary. Is very much like the iTunes MusicStore.

viJournal

The checklist does not really show the value of this application. It is more than a MicroContent Manager.

  • Drop-box - one can add files to a drop-box for easy reference;
  • Gallery - there is a gallery for keeping images;

Finder

I had a look at the file browser of MacOSX. Although I do not see a file as proper MicroContent, there are some similarities. Especially the amount of metadata attached to a file, make similar functions possible.

I noted the following things:

  • Metadata - this Client is mainly working on the metadata of a file and thus on the metadata of MicroContent Items. So it is a bit of a struggle to apply this checklist as metadata is sort of excluded by definition. However I have not been strict and bent the definition from time to time;
  • Trash - the Client has a special List, the trash can, for removing Items;
  • Alias - one can create links to files. One might see this as the Item of this Client
  • Archive - changes on or more Items to an Item in a new (Zip) format;
Supported MicroContent Type(s): Metadata
Rating: This Client gets 51 out of 90 points with checklist version 1.4. • Developer: Apple Version: 10.4.4 •

Checklist:
  • MicroContent (3/10) - to what degree does the client support MicroContent Items?
    • Structure - NO, although the associated metadata can be seen as structure. So this more a definition issue;
    • Multiplicity - NO, as we are not talking about MicroContent here;
    • Flexibility - NO, not relevant here;
    • MicroWeb - NO, not on the file level;
    • Pick-list fields - NO, but one can see the colour labels as pick-list metadata fields;
    • Merged - NO;
    • Title - YES, the name of the file. The extension is another matter;
    • Description - YES, called Spotlight Comments;
    • Tags - YES, the colour labels are related to tags. Thus only a limited number of tags are allowed;
    • Rating - NO;
  •
