MicroContent control

Richard McManus discusses ownership of MicroContent data. The evidence in case is Craiglist relation with Oodle. McManus rightly says that the owner of the data will always be in control. In this case that was Craigslist.

But where did Craigslist get their data from? Shouldn't the users be the ones that are in control? But can they be in control? And maybe they would like Oodle to use their data. Or maybe not?

So for me the problem lies with the services offered by Craiglist. Is syndication part of their services offering? And can authors expect that service? If so, the Oodle just misused the service and was cut off. If not, some clarification might be in place.

Anyway as an author you should be careful where you host your data. You should always be in control and should be able to specify whether you want your data to be syndicated or not? Or better seek a hoster who actively promotes syndication.
