Enclosures open Clients

Danny Ayers is thinking about getting the SemWeb better adopted. And this means in turn that MicroContent will be adopted whether that is in a microformat or not. I am not sure whether OPML is the way to either. Danny is dreaming about complex queries which the SemWeb would make possible.

I have a feeling that we are missing some steps. I am fond of local Applications to manage my MicroContent, which I call MicroContent Clients. Thus I have an application for managing my bookmarks, images, music, news, recipes, addresscards, etc. The main problem of these apps is that they are pretty lonely on my computer. I would like to enter (import or subscribe) MicroContent which I find on the web. So I would like to subscribe to Danny's addresscard in my AddressCard application, I would like to see Marc's recipes in my Recipe application and those pictures of cats can turn up in my Photo application, etc, etc.

I can do any interesting query locally if the applications connect the MicroContent nicely. And when it is possible to subscribe to all this information locally then it is time for the aggregators to come on the field. These aggregators might support more complex queries and more importantly can cover larger information bases.

I see RSS with enclosures as a great step for distributing MicroContent Items. It is up to the Clients to allow one to subscribe to the feeds. I would like to see a feed with a persons vCard as enclosure, or recipes in some standard format, etc. I think that podcasts and even Apple's photocasts show here the right direction. And I do not want to see all of this in my NewsReader, unless it is for reminding me of comment, i.e. presenting news.

And this is all just another step in the direction of SemWeb. Let the enclosures roll.
