Google Maps the new weblogs?

I have been following the various Google Maps. In my MicroContent context a Google Map is just an Items-list, i.e. a list of MicroContent Items. One can present a list of items in multiple ways. Usually for blog Items one uses a reverse chronological order with all the MicroContent information presented. naturally other other orderings are also used. In a MicroContent client one usually sees a tabular view with a summary (title, publication date, author) of each MicroContent Item per row. When a MicroContent Item contains an image, often a grid presentation is used, with on each grid point a thumbnail of the image. Flickr and iPhoto use this approach for instance. And when a MicroContent item contains a time and date, a calendar approach can be used. Just check out an application like iCal or a service like Eventful.

And with MicroContent Items that contain a co-ordinate (longitude and latitude) we now see another presentation method: the map. I noticed that many maps present only static MicroContent Items, i.e. the Items on the list do not change a lot. New Items do not need to be added. Although the content of the Item might be changeable (a weather map for instance).

So where are the map weblogs, such as the Endangered Species Sightings or my Sundial Sightings? We need more weblogs that include locations. We like to see more of a personal history of a location. Weblog hosters should add co-ordinates to weblog item fields. And where are the location aggregators. Do not see those either. I am waiting for Google to jump in this space. They know now where the location MicroContent is stored.

By the way one should see multiple Items-Lists (tabular, image-grid, calendar and map) for MicroContent Items that contain, a date, a title, an image and a location.

I think they’re coming.  Here’s mine: the hobomap.  After making this I created a Geo Mashup plugin so other WordPress users can have their own blog map.  I’ve seen similar extensions for other blog software.  I guess we’ll see if the idea takes off.
