I like what has been said in this interview with the Dalai Lama. It reminds me of the Holographic Universe. Enlightenment means to me a full understanding of both the implicate and explicate order (universes) and there relation between them. That also implies that one understands the purpose of life on a personal level. And that one behaves accordingly.
If he discusses emptiness and no independent existence, I have the impression that he talks about the implicate order, where everything is connected. There is then no independent existence. Also the mention of emptiness seems to point to the implicate order, where everything is born and goes to.
