Life purpose

In several articles I encountered the work a human must do in his life. In Sufism you are supposed to work on your ego. The idea is that you come lose of your ego on several levels. a similar idea can be found in Buddhism, but there it is called enlightenment (or awakening). Also in transpersonal therapy you have to work on yourself, which includes the spiritual part of yourself. The transpersonal therapy of Grof takes this a step further and outlines some specific steps to work on.

What is missing in these stories is the “why?”. In Buddhism it is a way to escape the lifecycle on earth. I assume that in Sufism it is something similar. Both of these “escape why’s”, imply that life on earth is a bad thing, that one has to escape. I can not accept this idea. There must be more to it.

Anyway, this why question, is an important part of the things we have to read on.

What is Enlightenment magazine

I think I found an interesting magazine: What is Enlightenment (WIE). They also have a website and seem to make available the content of older issues. As I have still a lot to catch up, it is a great place to start reading.

In the meantime: an interview with Frances Vaughan

by Susan Bridle, What is Enlightenment magazine, vol. 14

Vaughan is a transpersonal therapist. In this article she describes the role and education of such a therapist. A transpersonal therapist must have some knowledge of religions which go into awakenings, but does not have to be a practitioner them-self. The role of a therapist is not to guide, but to ask the right questions. A person must do it them-self.

Models and models

Having read two articles (Rakovic and Germine) I started wondering what good models are. I did not like these articles very much. The model the authors want to present is hidden in to much hyperbole, where all available theories are brought forward, from biophysical, ELF to relativity. This turns the articles into difficult to fathom prose. And this is a pity, because there might be some interesting ideas in it. There is also a lack of grounding in available literature.

Toward a new/old humanism: transitional states of consciousness as a clue?

by Dejan Rakovic (aft 1995)

The article describes a biophysical model for consciousness and altered states. The basis are the ULF brain waves. However in altered states these brain-waves extend much further than in conscious states. The ULF fields will extend to the acupuncture body of humans. This large extension allows for the integration of much more information than is normally possible.

On the quantum psychodynamics of dreams

by Mark Germine (1998)

This article uses terminology from quantum mechanics to explain the unconscious. He explains the unconscious by phenomena available in quantum mechanics.

The man with two heads

by Craig Hamilton

Hamilton interviews Sheikh Ragip / Robert Frager. Frager is a follower of Sufism and a psychologist. The question is how he can combine this two views. One of the answers is that the world is much larger than the one covered by western science. This does however not mean that western science is not useful. One of the big ideas of Sufism is defeat of ego, or better to gain control of your ego on all levels as a path to enlightenment. And psychology can help here as it explains how your lesser ego works. Note however that an education is science might stand in the way. Great spiritual leaders work on a different, more feeling, level and there scientific theory could be a hindrance.

Look for truth no matter where it takes you

by Simeon Alev (1994?)

Alev interviews F. David Peat on Bohm, Krishnamurti and himself.

The basic idea is that current science is too limited and should open itself up. Start from the unknown and not from the known. Get in contact with ideas from other culture and times and integrate it into current ideas. Our western language might not be able to talk about the new ideas due to its structure. The world is more complex than what we see and might be to deep to fathom.

Things that do not make sense

New Scientist published a list with 13 things that do not make sense. I get the impression that at least one belongs to the field of consciousness and thus is beyond our standard understanding.

I went through the list for possible candidates:

All the other items belong to physics or space. I am amazed at so many puzzles in that field and none in any other sciences. It seems a strange selection, but interesting nevertheless.
