Ste Colombe

This sundial is located on the southern side of a church, just below the rain gutter, which gives a nasty shadow. The layout is quite nice with the pigeon over the dial. There is a motto: “L’DAA E LA PES SANTA COUROUMBA TE BAILA”. I assume that this is in the provencal language. It might translate to “The god and the peace of Saint Couroumba will liberate you”

The dial had hour and half-hour lines, from 7:30 to 3:30. This also implies that the dial is oriented to the east. The dial is situated in Sainte Colombe, Hautes-Alpes, France. You can find it by entering the cemetery of the church. It is on the south wall of the church that intersects with the cemetary.

I saw the dial in the summer of 2004 on a clear day.

Villa Rey, Torino

This is a nice dial, as it is not oriented to the south, it is bit turned to the west. The design is very simple with just a rectangular slab of stone and some lines. It has a supported gnomon. The gnomon has a small ring at the top, which is unfortunately not used. The location of the dial is overgrown with trees, so I am not sure if it ever sees the sun. When I saw the dial, the building was in restoration, so I hope they will restore the dial as well.

The dial shows the hour lines from 8 to 5 o’clock,

The dial can be found on Villa Rey, on the southerly facade of this building. The Villa Rey is on the slopes south of Torino (across the river Po), Italy.

Seen on 12 july in the evening.

Via Rivoli, Susa

This is a extremely simple dial. They just just one of the anchors of the wall to create a support for a gnomon. The face of the dial is just a wedge. The position of dial is not well chosen. When I took the picture, around noon, the dial was in the shadow of the the gutters. Notice that the gnomon is pointing in the wrong direction, so I assume that they intended the horizontal stick to be used as gnomon.

The dial shows markers for the hours and half-hours from 6 to 6 o’clock. But I do not know at what date this is correct.

The dial can be found in Susa, Italy in the Via Rivoli close to the Piazza San Giusto naturally on the northern part of the street.

Seen on 12 july around noon.

Susa

This is a fairly simple dial with a supported gnomon. There are no stylistic features. There are however two zodiac signs visible for cancer and unknown. I do not understand what they are supposed to mean. They can not be related to the declination of the sun.

The dial shows the hour, half hour and quarter hour marks from 7 until 18 o’clock local time. The noon line has been made a bit longer.

The sundial can be found in Italy, in the Province of Piedmont, in the town of Susa. It is on the southern facing facade  of the church on Piazza San Giusto.

Seen on 12 july 2005 on 11:58.

Thoard

On a trip a la decouverte du temps perdu, we saw this dial. It is my first wild analemmatic dial. The hour points are created with stones with the hour in latin numbers painted on it. The gnomon is a rectangular piece of stone with markers at fixed solar azimuths and signs of the zodiac.

The hour markers go from 4 o’clock to unknown and mark true solar time.

The sundial is in France, Alpes de Haute-Provence in Thoard. This is just above Digne-les-bains on the departementale 17. The dial is situated in the middle of this village next the the seniors home

I saw this dial on the 28 march of 2005 on a nice day. The sundial displays 2 o’clock and w took the picture at 13:52.

Le Pont d’Alpe

I accidentally came across this sundial. The dial is facing to the west and when I was there, it was still in the shadow. The design is simple, but nice.

Unfortunately no markers can be seen anymore, but I guess only hour marks were visible.

This dial can be found in France in the department of the Hautes-Alpes. It is in the east of this department along the Route National 91 between Briançon and La Mure. It is at a very small place Le Pont de l’Alpe, about 15 minutes from Briançon on the east side of the road. The house is situated at the road on the right side of a walking path that goes to Alpe de Lauzet.

I saw the dial on tuesday 28 june 2005 on a nice day.
