MacOS X

MacOS X

MacOS-X is my standard operating system. Currently it is the only one that I use and much to my satisfaction. I have experience with Windows-98 and a little bit with Windows XP. However I prefer MacOS-X. I might be called a fan. But then I came a long way. Before this opearting system I used Os-9 for a while. It was OK. Before that I had a NeXTstep system at home, which was my favorite system. I was happy that Apple bought NeXT. Unfortunately it took them a while to deliver OS-X. I stepped in when the beta came out. It really looked a lot like NeXTstep and from then on it only got better.

I follow the OS updates pretty closely. For a minor update I usually wait a few days before committing myself. I buy the major updates, but I usually wait for the first minor update to appear. Each major update cost me money, but I think it is a useful expenditure. I hope that my computers (classic iBook and iMac DV-SE) can keep-up for a while. I plan my next hardware update in 2006 or so.

I nearly made the transition to OS-X. I only use Excel, Fireworks and Reunion under OS-9. I do not really see an alternative for Excel. I could use the OS-X version, but I find it to expensive. I like the Pivot tables of Excel. I use Fireworks as it is able to interact with my Umax scanner. No alternative here either. There is an OS-X version for Reunion, but a bit to expensive at the moment. Ande then there are the applications that are not truly OS-X. These applications for instance do not use the Services. I am not sure which applications that I use are not truly OS-X apps. I can only think of Winebook, an application to manage your wine cellar and drinking. There is an OS-X alternative for this one. Was it to expensive?

Anyway I try to buy and use only the true OS-X apps. They really benefit from the operation system foundation.

Omniweb

This is my favourite browser. One of the main reasons I like this browser is the tabbing and the related workspaces. Also the filtering of advertisements is pretty good. Unfortuantely I can not uses Ajax enhanced websites with this browser.

gCount

gCount

This is a small helper application that helps you check the status of your gMail account. Maybe with this app I will start using gMail. I saw no need for gMail as yet.

It turns out that i do not use this app, nor gMail.

Security Update

I regularly install the security updates released by Apple. Usually I wait some days before I commit myself. Just to make sure Apple did not release any errors.

I use this application to manage my digital photo library.

Apple posted this update which has a few small improvements. Does not seem to be very useful, but I downloaded this version anyway.

Mobster

Mobster

This application reads the a XML created by the Export Database command in iTunes. This file is next uploaded to the MusicMobs-service. Based on the XML-file a list of recommendations is created in this application. For each recommendation there are three links: one to open de corresponding page in MusicMobs, one to open the track in the iTunes Music Store and one to search for the track.

It is an interesting application, but when I am listening to music, I am not searching for new music. So this application is not very useful.

iPodRip

For checking the MusicMobs-service I needed to have the content of my music library in XML-format. iTunes offers an Export Library button to do this. However this only exports the content on the Mac and not what is on the iPod. I could not find any application or script which would do the same with the iPod-library. The only solution I could find quickly was to copy my iPod back to my Mac. That is what this application does. I guess when I got my XML-file, I can delete the files again. But it is nice to have such an application at hand.
