An anthropologist goes on a mission to explore, is hampered by The Enemy. And then he tries to overcome this enemy. Whilst doing this he discovers new parts of the planet and it's inhabitants. This is a classic D&D story: saving the world, a quest, a wizard, trolls, fights, elves, etc. One time I played D&D and while reading the book I remembered the dungeon master who rolled the dice in order to determine a happening of an encounter. In all a pleasant book, although sometimes the descriptions are a bit too heavy. Those are pages that I skip quickly. But it is the first of a sequel and it only gets better. I read this one first some 20 years ago. I still liked it. It is a classic D&D novel with wizards, elves, trolls and dwarfs. The story is about saving the world from the demons. The elves had captured these demons through a magic tree some millenia ago. Now the tree is dying and the demons come back.
