Subject: Epson Networked Printers
ANY networked EPSON printer supported by their Stylus RIP software will work fine under X provided you use the StylusRIP software. It may also apply to direct connected printers that use the StylusRIP software.
My current setup:
Beige G3/400 512 MB RAM with 30GB IDE (9.2.1 ONLY), 40GB IDE (data only) and 8GB SCSI (OS X/9.2.1 classic), ATI Radeon card, dual Sony 19in monitors MacSense 10/100 Ethernet card, Firewire/USB card, and an IBM Home Director X-10 interface. EVERYTHING works in OS X (except my Palm :( ). This is connected to an Asante 10/100 switch that has an Epson 850N, Airport Basestation (for Powerbook Ti500) and an Athalon 1.33 GHz windows box.
At first I set Classic to always startup and had an alias to StylusRIP in the startup folder. Took a LONNGG time for Classic to boot, but once it and the StylusRIP software was running, OS X could see the printer (Epson 850N) as a laserwriter. Printing was slow and a 50 MB Photoshop file choked it, but it DID work. I borrowed an old 8500 and set the StylusRIP software on it and I can print from any of my Macs to the Epson printer without any problems (including 75 MB image files).
I did take the extra step of copying (as Root) the PPD file for the EPSON 850N to /System/Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj and manually selecting the PPD file, but I’m not sure this is necessary.
For those with StylusRIP software this should provide a method of printing under OS X. For those without, $90 is getting pretty close to the price of getting a decent support printer (Epson C80 is $119 at CompUSA).
From Epson the supported printers are:
Stylus Color 800
Stylus Color 850
Stylus Color 900
Stylus Color 1520
Stylus Color 3000
Stylus Photo
Stylus Photo 1200
Stylus Photo EX
Stylus Pro 5000
