Objective

Fulfillment

Now that I have been working for some 20 years, I notice that my relation to work has changed. I have always been focussed on things that I found interesting to do. Earning money, career and management interest me less and less, although living comfortably is nice. The word fulfillment and doing interesting things are growing more important to me.

The focus of my working career has always been my interest in technology, innovation and understanding. I wanted to know how things work or could work. My analytical skills are strongly developed. I am able to see trends before they happen. My experience allows me to make links between multiple disciplines and provide a helicopter view.

I intend to use these skills as an independent researcher, writing books, commenting on developments on Online Services. And helping to develop new lines of business. I like the subjects blogging, micro-content, OpenReviews and related aggregator/networking services.

In the longer term I am going to do work of a more philosophical nature. I already started reading a lot, but this needs still a lot of work.

During three years I leaded a very large long term research programme (2 Mfl / yr). Goal of this programme was to find the sustainable competitive aspects of new services. In order to do this we first systematicly analysed the Interactive Services that KPN Telecom was likely to introduce and secondly identified thoses services that could have a sustainable competitive advatage based on technology.

As part of the programme we analyzed subjects such as Billing, Java Management, Communities, Streaming Media, Portals and mainly Personalization. We created several prototypes, which have been tested with consumers on the Internet.

IT Experience

Introduction

I still use Information Technology (IT) on a daily basis. Last years I have been more a user of IT, than a developer. My job more involved bridging IT with Business Impact, than the day-day usage of IT.

Hardware

Especially in the early days of my career, I used various hardware platforms. In my last years the expercience has been limited to the PC-platforms.
  • IBM, HP, Digital, Sun, PC's, Mac

Operating Systems

I used a lot of operating systems during my career, starting with punch cards.
  • IBM, JCL, VMS, Unix, MS-DOS, Windows 3.1, Windows NT, Allin1, NextStep, MacOS;
Programming Languages

Especially for my Ph.D. thesis I did a lot of programming work, in order to analyse images. Lately my programming work has been limited to scripting languages of software packages

  • Algol 60, PL1, Fortran, Sheltran, Pascal, Objective-C;

Applications

The number of software packages and applications I have been using is staggering as evaluating new software applications was a daily chore. There have been only a few packages that I used operationally (i.e. daily):
  • Teamwork, Ingres (SQL), MS Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), Dreamweaver, Internet (Explorer, Outlook);

Methods and Techniques

During a few years of my career I have been involved in IT development projects. For these projects I had to learn some methodology.
  • Object Modelling (Brainforce), Yourdon, Bachman, Shlaer&Mellor, Structure Charts.

Languages

Intro

I have had a chance to get acquainted with several languages. I have always been iterested in learing some words or doing a few lessons before I visit a country. Unfortunately lately I have not been able to build out these skills.
I list here the languages I have put the most effort in.

Dutch

My native language. What can I say about it. I did 13 years of school on it and I guess I am pretty good at it.

Read: very good Write:very good Speak: very good.

English

English is my main secondary language. I use English on a daily basis. I write reports in English, do presentations in English and work in English speaking project groups. Of course I am not as good as a native speaker and my proficiency can still be improved.

Read: very good Write:very good Speak: very good

French

I have a lot of experience wit French. I visit France several times a year, as I have family and friends living there. My working knowledge of french is mainly limited to a social environment and less to a working environment.

Read: good Write: average Speak: good

German

Regularly I have been in contact with this language through friends, television or work. I am able to use the language in a working environment.

Read: good Write: average Speak: good

Spanish

During my study Astronomy I made several visits to South America and I followed a few courses. My Spanish was good enough to help me on the street or read a newspaper. My understanding is more South American Spanish, than Spain Spanish.

Russian

During my study Astronomy at the University of Leiden, I did several courses in Russian. The main emphasis has been on reading texts. Unfortunately I did not have time to make it part of my official degree. Since my study I did not do anything with this language, so I lost my profiency. I think however that I can pick it up quite quickly.

Portuguese

During several visits to Portugal I had a chance to learn the basics of Portuguese. It was enough to help me on the street.

Interests and Activities

Intro

Although the major part of this resume is related to work activities, I still have a lot of time on my hand outside working hours. In fact I decided to work only for four days a week (30-36 hours) in order to be able to have enough time on my hand.

My son

Once my son, Alwin, was born I decided to work fewer hours, This would allow me to see and experience him growing up. I have been able to do all kinds of activities with my son and was so a father who is around. It also implied that I had to do (and still do) my fair share doing household chores.

Genealogy

Due to Internet I got interested in my roots. I have been busy researching my family name and set up a website (leene.net) to make contact with other family members and to share my research results.

Cooking

I have a keen interest in vegetarian cooking. I do the household cooking three days a week and I try to put something new on the table each time. I prefer however cooking on special events (friends visiting, special days, etc.). We built up a very large collection of cooking books and magazines from which we can create menu's. I try to keep a log with the recipes we tried out.

T’ai-Chi

My sporting activities are very limited. I am very interested in T'ai-Chi, which I would like to perfect some day in South-East Asia. I do it daily and started in 2005 with teaching a course in Veynes. I do a family style coming from Taiwan and I do the regular Yang-style, which I learned from Tang-Wei in Groningen, the Netherlands.

Civilizations origin

I am interested in the origins of civilization, such as Sumer, Egypt, Meso- and South-America. I am especially interested in the more dissident thoughts that are around and I am intrigued by all the artifacts that we are not able to explain yet. I am mainly reading a lot about this subject.

Living environment

We live in a house, which was built some twenty years ago. We moved in around 2002. So a lot needs to be done to have a living environment, which we like. This takes a lot of work and time. But as we spend here 24 hours a day, it is worthwile to do. We see it every day.

Nature walking

I enjoy doing long (20-25 km) nature walks and I walked some long distance trails involving multiple days. I keep a log of some of the walks I did. I like to watch and determine bird- and plantlife. My dream is to walk to Santiago de Compostella someday starting as high north as possible.
